Summary

  • Oversee Enterprise investments including legal entity and company sponsored pension plan investments 
  • Responsible for the accuracy and completeness of internal controls, US GAAP and the NAIC statutory accounting and reporting related to Enterprise legal entity investments 
  • Primary relationship manager with investment managers, custodian bank and consultants for oversight of the legal entity and company sponsored pension plan investments including compliance with investment guidelines and New York State regulations 
  • Collaborate extensively internally and externally to ensure processes and reporting are compliant, effective and efficient 
  • Ownership of the accounting close and reporting including presentations to senior management related to annual operating budget, monthly forecast/close, and P&L reporting related to Investments and other Treasury-related income and expense items 


Responsibilties

  • Oversee the activities of EmblemHealth’s investment managers as the liaison between investment managers and the company. 
  • Monitor each manager’s portfolio to ascertain adherence to Investment Policy Statement and benchmark performance; review overall asset allocations and recommend strategies to improve risk adjusted returns; provide responses to requests from senior management and regulators.
  • Establish protocols that will ensure compliance with the organization’s investment guidelines and New York State regulations.  
  • Produce monthly, quarterly and annual reporting and commentary on investment performance including VaR analysis of investment portfolio. 
  • Create presentations quarterly for Board/Board Committee meetings which includes presenting at an entity meeting.
  • Monitor funded status of company sponsored pension plans including review and assessment of liability driven investing results. Calculate equity call option index for pension funds.  Monitor company contributions to sponsored defined benefit plans 
  • Review the processing and accounting of investment transactions. Ensure timely receipt of investment feed by coordinating with FinCloud and external investment accounting service provider.
  • Oversee and approve journal entries and account reconciliations related to Enterprise investments including GAAP to STAT and par value reconciliations between investment manager and custodian. 
  • Primary liaison with investment accounting service provider to ensure effective and efficient issue resolution.
  • Prepare review of OTTI analysis of investments quarterly liaising with investment accounting service provider and investment managers. 
  • Provide schedules and footnote disclosures for quarterly and annual financial statement preparation including fair value leveling tables.
  • Manage the investment schedules and reporting for the Company’s pension plans including fair value leveling tables. 
  • Assist Controller’s Department with quarterly and year-end financial audit activities for investment-related matters including responses to STAT General Interrogatories.
  • Provide comprehensive and timely management reporting and review fair value for GAAP reporting for the Enterprise; compile data for pension and corporate audits (BDO, Deloitte and KPMG) and provide adequate explanation on all queries.
  • Open and manage custody accounts; maintain adequate funding of pension custody and cash flow accounts and coordinating with Retirement Services; ensure that all tax and legal documents are up to date. 
  • Execute investment purchases and sales following management approvals within the custody accounts. 
  • Ensure purchase orders are prepared and approved along with timely payment of invoices and establishment of accruals for expenses where needed. 
  • Ensure compliance of Model Audit Rule (MAR) controls and work with internal and external auditors.
  • Review SSAE 18 SOC 1 reports in the evaluation of internal controls operating effectively. 
  • Develop and continually improve budgeting, financial projections and forecasts for investment and Treasury-related income and expense accounts.
  • Review investment and other Treasury-related P&L accounts and provide analyses on results versus expectations.
  • Monitor and analyze trends of key performance indicators.
  • Present and report on financial results and analyses monthly and quarterly to senior management.
  • Manage direct and non-direct staff for the execution of various initiatives.
  • Develop staff by managing performance, setting goals, providing ongoing training and maintaining strong employee relationships. 
  • Provide research and analytical support to senior management and/or outside consultants, as necessary.
  • Develop and/or make improvements to current processes and procedures. 
  • Provide investment- related expertise and stay abreast of changes in accounting standards

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Business, Finance, Accounting or related; Master’s preferred.
  • Professional credentials (CPA) preferred. 
  • 10+ years of relevant professional work experience demonstrating growth in experience. (R)
  • Demonstrated technical experience with business/corporate accounting utilizing GAAP, SOX, FASB ASC 820, etc. (R)
  • Demonstrated technical experience with extensive knowledge of investments. (R) 
  • Health care industry, insurance company investment portfolio, and statutory accounting experience preferred. (P) 
  • Financial reporting experience to both internal and external entities with analytical skills to develop and interpret financial analyses. (R)
  • Self-starter with ability to take initiative and perform research to identify, analyze, and recommend actionable solutions to issues. (R)
  • Excellent planning, organization, time management, prioritization, problem solving, and multitasking skills to accomplish deliverables on a timely basis. (R)
  • Excellent communication (verbal, written, presentation, interpersonal/relationship building) skills. (R)
  • Effective team player with proven track record of collaboration and coordination with other business areas. (R)  
  • Strong leadership skills along with the ability to engage and inspire internal and cross functional teams. (R) 
  • Ability to develop, cultivate, and maintain excellent relationships within, and external to, the Company. (R) 
  • Proficiency and advanced knowledge of Excel, Word, PowerPoint, and Adobe. (R)  
  • Experience in financial process/systems improvement. (R)
  • Knowledge of portfolio management and reporting and custodian systems (i.e., PFS, Bloomberg, Moody’s Analytics). (R)
