Summary:

The Assistant General Counsel reviews, draws up contracts related to provider agreements, management agreements, licenses, purchases, employment, insurance and other matters. This position studies proposed, and existing legislation affecting the organization and advises with departments concerned. Gives legal advice with respect to organization administration and prepares organization resolutions and forms.  Reviews and approves advertising copy and public statements from a legal standpoint. Anticipates and guards against legal risks involving the organization.

  • Responsibilities:
    Provides legal advice, counsel and services that ensure the organization is operating in compliance with regulations and that regulatory reporting requirements are met including investigating and resolving compliance problems and responding to questions from the business and regulatory agencies.
  • Provides thought leadership on industry and regulatory developments as well as on the development and implementation of operational and risk management processes and procedures related to EmblemHealth’s business.
  • Manages DOH/DOI regulatory matters concerning providers, risk contracts and HMO service area and program expansions and contractions.
  • Litigation Management – Manage claims and litigation including the discovery process for all substantive litigation and closely partner with departments to collect information while managing litigation counsel.
  • Assists in the continual development of strategies to mitigate risk in close partnership with the Chief Legal Officer.
  • Identifies, assesses, communicates and reduces corporate risk.
  • Works closely with the communication and marketing teams, overseeing public communications and press releases.
  • Handles other contractual, regulatory, litigation, corporate or real estate matters as requested.

Requirements:

  • Juris Doctorate and admission to the NYS Bar are required
  • Minimum of 10 years of relevant experience required
  • Strong understanding of legal risks surrounding EmblemHealth operations
  • Superior analytical abilities
  • Understanding of and ability to work with various EmblemHealth departments
  • Strong contract analysis abilities

Pay Disclosure

A good faith estimate of the compensation range for individuals hired to work for the EmblemHealth Family of Companies is provided. This compensation range is specific and considers factors such as (but not limited to) the scope and responsibilities of the position, the candidate’s work experience, education/training, internal peer equity, and market and business considerations. The disclosed range estimate has not been adjusted for the applicable geographic differential associated with the location at which the work is being performed. It is not typical for an individual to be hired at or near the top of the range, as compensation decisions depend on each case’s facts and circumstances. Union roles covered by a collective bargaining agreement will compensate in accordance with the union contract.
